The word 'Chakra' is an ancient Sanskrit word which literally translates as 'wheel'. We can therefore visualise Chakras as spinning wheels of energy, hovering around the body. Chakras are often depicted as geometric shapes (Yantras), derived from the lotus flower.
Although Chakras do not have a physical form, they influence the physical body & can affect our emotions, our physical & mental well-being if they become imbalanced. The Eastern tradition of 'Chakra balancing' forms an important part of the style of Indian Head Massage practised in the West today.
The energetic flow in & around the body can be disturbed by illness, emotional trauma or the stress placed on the body during everday life. Once the function of the chakras is hindered, the flow of energy is disturbed and may manifest in the body, emotionally or physically.
There are numerous chakras spinning within the energetic body, Indian Head Massage is concerned with the Seven Major Chakras. By focusing on the subtle energy of the chakras, the harmony of unbalanced chakras can be restored.

Ayurveda literally means ‘knowledge of life’:
Ayur meaning life and Veda meaning knowledge
This ancient art recognises the importance of massage and holistic treatment to promote health, beauty & wellbeing, bringing balance to the body, mind and spirit.
Ayurvedic belief teaches that our emotional and physical wellbeing is governed by the three life-giving forces, the doshas: Vata, Pitta & Kapha
Vata houses the mind, body & senses.
Pitta governs the heat & energy of the body, it's metabolism & digestive functions.
Kapha is responsible for our physical structure & stability, and the balance of fluids within the body.
Indian Head Massage (IHM) can encourage the doshas towards equilibrium, enabling the body to function more efficiently, promoting our health and wellbeing.
